Instruments

  1. ASCEND 400MHz WB NMR/DNP Spectrometer for Solids

The brand new Bruker ASCEND III HD 400MHz (9.4T) wide bore (89mm) spectrometer is available for solid-state NMR experiments. Also featured is a (+/-) 750 Gauss sweep coil enabling the possibility of high field dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments once a microwave source is aquired.

The three channel spectrometer is currently equiped with following probes:

    • a 4mm MAS triple resonance broadband X/Y/H probe

         -- H channel: 1H (400MHz) only

         -- X channel: 207Pb (81 MHz) - 31P (171 MHz)

  2. Avance 800MHz SB NMR Spectrometer for Solids/Liquids

The newly acquired Bruker AVANCE III Ultrashield Plus 800 MHz (18.8T) narrow bore (54mm) spectrometer is available for both solid-state and solution-state NMR experiments per request.

This user friendly machine uses Bruker SampleCase - a 24 sample, waist level, random-access, automation system for sample loading.

    800 MHz Solid-state NMR probes:

    • a 3.2mm Tri-Gamma HXY triple resonance MAS probe (max. speed 24kHz)
    • a 1.8mm HX double resonance MAS probe (max. speed 50kHz)

    800 MHz Solution-state NMR probes:

  3. Avance DMX500MHz SB NMR Spectrometer for Solution

The newly upgraded Bruker AVANCE500 spectrometer is a narrow bore, high resolution, NMR spectrometer that is primarily used for solution NMR spectroscopy but can also be used for solid-state NMR spectroscopy. It is a four channel spectrometer that operates at 11.7T (1H frequency of 500MHz).

  4. Avance DSX300MHz WB NMR Spectrometer for Solids

The Bruker AVANCE300 NMR spectrometer is a wide bore (89mm), high resolution, solid NMR spectrometer operating at a magnetic field strength of 7 T (1H frequency is 300MHz). It has the following features:

  5. Avance IPSO500MHz WB NMR Spectrometer for Solids

The Bruker AVANCE500 WB spectrometer (11.7T) is exclusively used for solid-state NMR spectroscopy. It is a three channel spectrometer equipped with the following probes:

    • a 4mm MAS double resonance broadband 1H/X probe
    • a 7mm MAS double resonance broadband 1H/X probe
    • a 4mm MAS triple resonance double broadband 1H/X/Y probe
    • a 1.3mm MAS double resonance broadband 1H_19F/X probe capable of spinning up to 70 kHz

For more details of individual nuclei, please see:

  6. Bruker 300MHz SWB MRI/Diffusion Spectrometer

The newly ordered Bruker 300MHz Super-Wide Bore MRI/Diffusion Spectrometer has multiple capabilities.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): MRI is an imaging technique used to produce high quality images of objects such as human bodies, small animals and materials. The images reflect the spatial distribution of NMR signals for the nucleus of interest over a space. As a upgrade to MRI, Rheo-NMR, a combination of NMR and Rheology, measures the rheological properties of materials at the microscopic molecular levels.

  7. Bruker EMXplus EPR Spectrometer

The Bruker EMXplus Spectrometer System uses EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) which is a very useful and powerful technique for studying samples that are paramagnetic (i.e. have unpaired electrons). Applications of EPR include:

  8. Nicolet Magna 850 FTIR Spectrometer with FT-Raman module
    • The FT-IR 850 Bench is equipped with specific sets of beamsplitter/detectors:
      • ability to work in the
        • Mid-IR (400 - 4,000 cm-1) --- framework basicity
        • Near-IR (4,000 - 12,500 cm-1) --- defect SiOH
        • Far-IR (10 - 400 cm-1) --- cations translations
      • cells allowing in-situ measurements both in transmission and in reflection
      • Diffuse Reflectance (DRIFTS) --- highly opaque or weakly absorbing samples
      • Photoacoustic (PAS) --- opaque samples
  9. Q-Sense E4 Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D)

The Q-Sense E4 is a real-time analytical instrument for studies of molecular events occurring on surfaces. The E4 measures mass and viscoelastic properties of molecular layers as they build up or change on the sensor surface. Areas of interest include materials, protein and surfactant research.

  10. Varian Cary Eclipse Fluorimeter

The Cary Eclipse Fluorescence Spectrophotometer from Varain has the following features and capabilities.

  11. Varian VNMRS 600MHz SB NMR Spectrometer for Solution

The Varian VNMRS 600 MHz spectrometer is a standard bore, high resolution, NMR spectrometer that is used for solution NMR spectroscopy. It is a three channel spectrometer that operates at 14.1 T (1H frequency of 600MHz). It is equipped with a double resonance Broadband Probe Head for solution (600 DB Auto X) and a Triple-Resonance Probe (5mm Auto HCN PFG) for biological solution NMR.
